The middle turbinate is an important landmark when examining the nose and during sinus surgery. In this picture, holes have been drilled into it so you can see through it. A decongestant spray usually makes it visible during an exam. The front sinuses sit just to the side of the middle turbinate. The forehead sinus, the cheek sinus, and the front ethmoid sinuses all drain out from underneath it.
