You can see the drainage from the front sinuses moving along the inside surface of the uncinate bone, through the slots. This channel can be very narrow, and it is a common spot for blockages. Removing the uncinate bone opens up more room for drainage. The uncinate also has to be removed to give the surgeon's scope and instruments access to the ethmoid sinuses and the opening of the cheek sinus.
