The front half of the middle turbinate works like an awning. It creates a sheltered spot — out of the way of fast airflow and floating particles — where the front sinuses can drain. The space underneath this awning is called the middle meatus. The front of the middle turbinate can sometimes be mistaken for a polyp during a nose exam. A decongestant spray may be needed to see it clearly.
