Many sinus infections seem to start with swelling inside the nose from a virus or from allergies. That swelling can block off a key drainage area called the ostiomeatal complex (shown with a blue glow). You can think of the ostiomeatal complex as the main intersection where drainage from all the front sinuses comes together.
