CME - Learn About the Sinuses

This short course offers health care providers a fresh look at how the nose and sinuses are built, how they work, what can go wrong, and how those problems are treated. To finish the course, watch the three videos in order, then register and take the  CME test on this page.

Still pictures from the videos are collected in the "Companion Booklet PDF", but you do not need it to take the course.
If you have a VR headset, 3D TV, red/blue glasses, or a Google Cardboard viewer, you can watch the videos in 3D by visiting this page.

Basic Sinus Anatomy

This video walks you through the basics of sinus anatomy using 3D computer models, hands-on dissections, and CT scan pictures. You will see where each sinus sits and what it looks like: the cheek sinus (maxillary), the forehead sinus (frontal), the small honeycomb sinuses between the eyes (ethmoid), and the deep sinus behind the eyes (sphenoid). Everything is explained in simple terms.

Nasal Anatomy and Function

This video walks you through the inside of your nose and how it works. It focuses on how your nose is built to do its main job: taking in outside air and delivering it to your lungs clean, warm, and moist.

Problems and Solutions

This video covers the most common nose and sinus problems, the main ways they are treated, and explains common sinus operations in plain terms.

Nasal Anatomy and Function

This video walks you through the inside of your nose and how it works. You will see the wall that divides the left and right sides of the nose (the septum), how air flows through each side, the scroll-shaped structures inside the nose (the middle and lower turbinates), the spot where the nose naturally swells and shrinks, and the tiny paths the sinuses use to drain. The focus is on how your nose is built to do its main job: taking in outside air and delivering it to your lungs clean, warm, and moist.

Problems and Solutions

This video covers the most common nose and sinus problems, including colds and runny noses caused by viruses, short-term sinus infections from a cold, short-term sinus infections caused by bacteria, long-term sinus infections, a crooked wall inside the nose (deviated septum), scroll-shaped structures inside the nose that have grown too large (enlarged turbinates), and how the nose is sometimes packed after surgery. Common sinus operations are explained in plain terms.
